PROJECT REVEAL: St Kilda East Bathroom Renovation

If you've been over on our Instagram page recently, you will have seen that we have been releasing images of our recently completed St Kilda East project. This was a bathroom and ensuite which we converted into a bathroom and powder room instead, to better suit this family's needs. We were approached by the builder to complete these designs only a couple of weeks before their kitchen renovation was scheduled to begin on site, as the client realised that this was the perfect time to renovate the bathroom as well. We were lucky that the client knew exactly what she liked and we were able to complete the design in time for their site start in January 2023.

BEFORE

The aim with this renovation was to rework the side-by-side ensuite and bathroom in order to create two new rooms that made the best use of all available space. With it's lack of vanity storage, it's pokey layout and small shower, the current bathroom space just wasn't working well for this young family. The adjacent ensuite was small and awkward to use, and the client decided it was more important to create a powder room that could be used when the bathroom was occupied.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

While the bathroom needed a modern refresh, it was also important that the new design still suited the original details that we were keeping - such as the pressed tin ceiling, the paneled door and double hung window. The client's love of terrazzo formed the base for the design and a striking terrazzo-look tile was selected to go into both spaces. The colours and finishes were also inspired by the previously designed kitchen renovation, which was right next to the bathroom and powder. To create cohesion between the kitchen and the bathroom/powder, the same timber-look cabinetry and benchtop was carried throughout. The feature subway tile was also laid in a vertical stacked pattern as a nod to the feature VJ paneling in the kitchen/dining space.

FINAL RESULT

Unfortunately, a few minor changes had to be made to the design and layout due to site constraints found during demolition stage. However, the overall concept remained unchanged and delivered a fantastic result. We are incredibly happy with how the spaces turned out - they feel much larger and have provided our clients with a lot more storage as well. Check out what they have to say about working with us:

"Thank you YDM Design Studio for producing our fabulous bathroom/laundry. Nina listened to our brief and developed a wonderful colour palate for us. Timelines and process were clear for first time renovators like ourselves. Would happily recommend Nina and her team."

- Harriet, St Kilda East Client
