Little kitchen details that can make a big difference

Kitchen renovations are often big investments, so it's important to ensure that you have considered every option and you are maximising the space as much as possible. However, sometimes it's the little easy-to-miss details that can take your space to the next level. In this blog post, we will be exploring 5 seemingly small details that we always add to our kitchen designs, which make a big difference.

1 | Cabinetry depth

The standard cabinetry depth tends to be 600mm deep. However, I like to make cabinetry 700mm deep instead where possible. This is because I find that many cooktops tend to be quite large and fit 700mm depths much better. Secondly, I find that standard fridges stick out into the room a lot if we only allow a 600mm depth for them. Lastly, I just feel that the extra 100mm makes the space more functional and feels more luxurious.

2 | Overhang depth

Most standard overhangs at an island bench are around 300mm deep. However, if you plan to sit at the bench a lot you will probably want to increase this to 400mm to comfortably fit with your legs under the overhang.

3 | Drop down overhead doors

If you're after a handle-less look for your overhead cupboards, we recommend making your overhead doors 20mm longer than the cabinets. This allows the 20mm to drop down past the bottom of the cabinet and creates a lip to use for opening the door. However, even if you have handles on your overheads, we still like to do drop-down doors. This helps to hide the underside of the cabinet including the integrated rangehood and any LED strips, creating a cleaner design.

4 | LED strips

If you've been around here for a while you would have heard me go on about LED strips before. They are just such a useful and fairly inexpensive way to add light right over your kitchen benches without shadows! My tip with this is to ensure that the colour of the light matches the other lights in the room. It is very obvious and jarring when you have a cool light near a warm light.

5 | Power point locations

Power points are a vital part of a functional kitchen, but where you place them also makes a big difference. We love putting power points out of sight while still making them very practical. This can include putting them on a side wall instead of on your beautiful splashback, or hiding them right below the overhang on an island bench. A little tip if adding a power point to a dark splashback or cabinet is to specify a black power point instead of white.

I hope these ideas have been helpful! If you want to find out more about how we can help you with your project, get in contact with us below:
