How to design the perfect mud room

A mud room is usually located near your main entrance or at a secondary entrance, like the garage or laundry door. It's a place to store things you usually take off as you walk into the home like shoes, coats, and handbags. They are incredibly practical as you always know where everything is, and it's all right there as you're rushing out the door. There are a few things that we like to add to mud rooms to make these spaces as practical as possible:

1 | Shoe storage & a seat

Most people will take their shoes off, or change into indoor shoes, as they walk in. It therefore makes sense to ensure there is a space to put them away when you walk in, so that you're not tripping over them on your way out. To help you put them on and take them off, we also recommend to add a little seat. We actually like to combine the two and put the shoe storage below the seat.

2 | Coat cupboard

Another thing you're likely to put on and take off at the door is a coat or outdoor jacket. We therefore like to add a coat cupboard with a rail to keep these in. However, if there is only one or two coats that you want to keep at the door, a few wall hooks might be enough instead of a coat cupboard.

3 | Space for keys, etc.

The last thing you want as you are rushing out the door, is to realise you can't find your keys. We therefore recommend creating a spot where keys can automatically go as you walk in. This could be a bench, a drawer or hook on the wall. A drawer can also be used to store other things like your wallet, mail, sunglasses, etc. that you might want easy access to as you're walking out the door.

4 | Space for handbags and backpacks

Handbags and backpacks can be stored in many different ways. You may just want a bench that you place these onto so it's easy to grab on your way out. If are lacking space, maybe a few hooks on the wall so you can hang them up could be better. If you would like to remove all clutter, you can instead create a drawer or cupboard where you place these into instead.

5 | Other items

Every family is different and therefore their mud room will have different requirements. Other items that you may want to consider creating storage for include: pet supplies like leaches and poo bags, umbrellas, gloves/scarves, hats, sunscreen and insect repellent, reusable bags for shopping, sporting equipment and helmets, gardening equipment, first aid kit, etc.

I hope these ideas have been helpful! If you want to find out more about how we can help you with your project, get in contact with us below:
