Curves are almost everywhere you look in interior design, offering a soft and sophisticated alternative to traditional straight lines and angles. Embracing curves can transform your home into a cosy and elegant haven - creating an inviting space that is also visually captivating. In this post we will explore 5 ways in which you can include curved forms into your home:
1 | Joinery
If you've been looking at kitchens and bathrooms on Pinterest or Instagram, you will likely have seen a lot of curves within joinery. It is such a great way to soften the look of joinery and make it more interesting. A really popular and easy way to do this is to finish off the corners of the island bench with curves. We are also seeing a lot of curves as arches, both in kitchens (eg. the doors on a feature appliance cupboard or bar nook) and in bathrooms (eg. arched shaving cabinets).
2 | Walls
Much less popular than curved joinery is curved walls. Houses are generally built with a lot of right angles, which allows joinery and furniture to be placed a lot easier. However, adding a curved wall to a lounge or a bathroom can make the space feel a lot softer and cosier. Another great place for curved walls is a tight or awkward hallway with a few sharp corners. One tip if you are planning to include a tiled curved wall within your bathroom, is to select a mosaic tile like a kit-kat tile for that wall so that it can bend easily along the curved wall.
3 | Doors and windows
Adding arches to door ways and windows can be a fantastic way to make them more of a feature. This could be an arched french door out to your back yard, a feature arched window in the kitchen or bathroom, or as an internal arched door at the end of a long hallway. It is also a lovely way to incorporate a curved feature into the exterior of your home, as the external door or window will be seen from outside as well.
4 | Fixtures and fittings
You can make the curves a bit more subtle by selecting rounded fixtures and fittings instead. There are so many ways to bring in soft curved forms into any space by selecting the right tapware, lights and other fixtures. This may be a goose-neck mixer tap, a curved wall or pendant light, an oval vanity basin, or even including a curved corner to the top of your shower screen.
5 | Furniture and decor
Lastly, the easiest way to includes curves without having to renovate your space is to do it through your furniture and decor. This could be as easy as adding an oval coffee table to your lounge, or hanging an arched or round mirror in the entry. Other fun ideas include curved couches, curved bed heads, oval dining tables, and curved floor lamps.
