5 Ideas for spaces with cathedral ceilings

Cathedral ceilings create a sense of grandeur and openness in any space, but they also present unique design opportunities. If you are lucky enough to have cathedral ceilings in your home, we highly recommend making this a feature and finding ways to draw your eye up to the ceiling.  In this blog post we will give you five ideas that will help you transform your space and accentuate your ceiling.

1 | Highlight the ceilings with lights

One way to feature the ceilings at night, is to have spotlights or up lights located along your walls that shoot light up to your ceilings only. Not only does this create visual interest, but it also serves to create a lovely mood lighting for relaxing in.

2 | Take joinery all the way to the ceiling

One tip to help draw your eyes up to the ceiling is to elongate the elements that sit along the walls. A common way to do this is by taking any cabinetry like a kitchen, a TV unit or bookshelf all the way to the ceiling. Not only does this look more grand, but it will also provide you with maximum storage space. This also applies to other elements like a fireplace and window furnishings.

3 | Take windows and doors as high as possible

Similar to the point above, you don't want to have lovely high ceilings with low doors and windows. We recommend increasing the height of doors (whether internal or external) and any windows as much as possible.

4 | Add skylights

Cathedral ceilings are a perfect place to add skylights to help flood your room with natural light. They can also become part of the overall design of the ceiling, drawing your eyes up to them. If the space is a main living area or a bedroom, don't forget to add electric blackout blinds that can close and open with the touch of a button.

5 | Add texture and warmth

Depending on the style of the home and what the space is used for, it may work well to add some texture and pattern to the ceiling. Examples of this could be cladding your ceiling in VJ paneling (either painted in a ceiling white or as a timber look), continuing a wallpaper onto the ceiling (great for a bedroom) or simply adding some decorative timber beams.
