Designing the perfect ensuite is all about creating a space that feels personal, functional, and calming. In this post, we’ll share five essential tips to help you craft an ensuite that not only meets your needs but also enhances your daily routine. From minimising light and sound intrusion into the bedroom to maximising natural light and making the space feel larger, each tip is designed to elevate both style and practicality. By focusing on what matters most to you, your ensuite can become a serene retreat that seamlessly blends with the rest of your home.
1 | Make it yours
Unlike the main bathroom, this space is yours and your partners only. There is no need to match that you have in other bathrooms or to go simple and plain. This is a space you'll likely use multiple times a day, and so we recommend making it a space that really speaks to you. Whether that's through the tiles, joinery or tapware, aim to make it your happy place!
2 | Prioritise
Ensuites are usually on the small side, which means it's unlikely you'll be able to fit everything you want. If you are wanting to add a large double shower, a long double basin vanity, and a bath, you may instead need to compromise in one area to prioritise another. What we definitely don't recommend is making clearances smaller to try to fit as much as possible. Make sure that there is enough space in front and around all your fittings and fixtures to use them all comfortably.
3 | Creating the illusion of space
There are a few small tricks that can help make the space feel larger than it is. These include having a floating vanity, a tiled shower base with a frameless shower screen, a large mirror and a toilet with an in-wall cistern. We have a blog post that is all about creating the illusion of space in a bathroom that you can read below:
4 | Light and sound intrusion
Once you know what you will include in the space, another important thing to consider in the layout is how light and sound will affect the bedroom space. This is particularly important if one person is likely to use the ensuite while the other one is sleeping. Consider if the location of the door will shine light onto the bed, and ensure that the toilet and shower aren't right next to someone's head so it doesn't wake them when flushed or turned on.
5 | Natural light
Natural light is important in every room, but particularly when it's a small space like an ensuite. If there is no space for a window, or if the window is quite small, we recommend adding a skylight in the ceiling. Not only will this help with using the space, but it will also make the room feel larger!
