Navigating a small dining room can be a challenge, as no one wants to feel cramped while enjoying a family dinner or entertaining friends. However, there are some ways to maximise your small dining area, making it feel more spacious and inviting. In this post we are proposing 3 different options to consider, depending on your space, needs and budget.
1 | Banquette Seating
Consider adding banquette seating to at least one side of the table, allowing you to push the table closer toward the wall to create a larger walkway on the other side. Banquette seating can go against one wall, below a window, in a corner as a banquette nook, or could even be incorporated into the back of an island bench. Adding a banquette also allows you to create additional storage below the seat, either through drawers or a lift up seat.
2 | Integrate your table into your island bench
If you prefer the flexibility of chairs over a banquette and your dining is next to your kitchen, you can save space by making the dining table an extension of your island bench instead. This again allows you to create a larger walkway to the other side and make the space feel less cramped. These are be very practical as well, particularly for families who spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
3 | Choose your furniture carefully
If you are prefer your table and chairs as freestanding pieces of furniture, then it's important to choose these carefully. Opt for tables that are round or oval, as they take up less space than square and rectangle options. For chairs, consider ones with a rattan or open frame back that allow you to see through them. It's also important to consider the scale of the furniture, making sure the table doesn't feel too large or too small in the space.
